Part I, Chapter II--Understanding other Cultures

What do you learn about Russian culture from Katerina Ivanovna’s marriages, her reactions to others, such as Lebeziatnikov and Marmeladov, and their reactions to her?

  1. In Amanda’s blog about Russian culture, she states, “One may learn about Russian culture from Katerina Ivanovna's marriage that love is not always in marriages.” This proves true when one examines her marriage with Marmelodov. Marmelodov's marriage proposal was of pity towards her. This relationship is built on a foundation that is more concerned with money. This factor replaces the variable of love that one would see in American culture.
