Throughout this chapter, Raskolnikov responds in what ways to various other people, and why?

  1. In Ryan's blog about the way Raskolnikov responds to people, he states, "In his conversation with Marmeladov, we find a broken man (Marmeladov) and one who may be broken with time (Raskolnikov)". This proves true when one considers the kind of people who Raskolnikov is opposed to confronting. Perhaps he does not oppose talking to Marmeladov because he sees in him what may become of himself- a once-successful, fairly normal man who becomes so self-absorbed that he loses himself altogether.

  2. In Gabrielle’s blog about how Raskolnikov responds to certain characters she states, “He sees himself as better than the prostitutes and drunkards that live in his neighborhood, and feels that because he is a student he should not have to associate with those he considers below him.” This is proven true when one considers how Raskolnikov views his neighbors. Although he does not speak very much, he chooses who he talks to according to their status. He has no problem conversing with Marmeladov, the drunk man he recently met; however he becomes quite arrogant when speaking with the pawn lady, Alyona.

  3. In Sean’s blog addressing why throughout this chapter, Raskolnikov responds in various ways to other people, he states,” his kindness is made prevalent in certain situations, such as his subtle donation of money to the Marmeladovs… his interactions with almost everyone else are obviously much less civil”. This proves true when one considers his various responses with each person he talks to. For certain people, Raskolnikov has a different compassion for. For example, when Raskolnikov sees the young teen on the street he immediately feels sympathy for her and wants to help her in anyway he can. He even goes so far as to giving money for the teen's safe arrival home. On the contrary, for the older gentleman who is looking to take advantage of the young girl's status being under the influence, Raskolnikov is ready to battle this man for his appalling behavior. This shows how Raskolnikov responds differently to other people.

  4. In Gabrielle's blog addressing the ways in which Raskolnikov responds to various people and why, she states, "Raskolnikov interacts with others in an abstract kind of way, he has no real contact due to his delusional ways." This is true considering the fact that Raskolnikov acts as if he is mad at the world. Raskolnikov is so stubborn that he would not even except the help of others even when he clearly needs it. _L'Mont

  5. In Gabrielle's blog addressing the ways in which "Raskolnikov responds to various other people, and why", she states, "Raskolnikov interacts with others in an abstract kind of way, he has no real contact due to his delusional ways." This can be proven true because in the novel Raskolnikov avoided human contact as much as possible. For example, in the beginning of the novel Raskolnikov would sneak pass his landlady door.

  6. In Gabrielle's blog addressing in what ways does Raskolnikov respond to others, she states, "Raskolnikov interacts with others in an abstract kind of way, he has no real contact due to his delusional ways." This proves true when one analyses the attitude Raskolnikov possesses. He avoids contact with other people and rejects the help of others.
