Part I, Chapter I--Symbolism

Why may the temperature or time of year be important in this section of the novel?

  1. The temperature and the time of year may be important in that it may have been a cause to Alyona’s death. Usually, when the temperature is really high, it saps a person’ strength. So, they may be slightly sluggish when they are walking around, like Raskolnikov, but they may also be slightly sluggish in the mind. Sometimes people are slow to respond, have problems speaking coherent sentences, and may even become short-tempered and irritable. Also, the time of the year plays an important role. For example, in Crime and Punishment, the month is July, which means that it is the summer. Most people who do not have work are bored easily during the summer time. Thus, Raskolnikov’s boredom causes his mind to make itself busy, which in turn causes him to murder Alyona.

  2. In Janiel's blog about the importance of temperature in the opening of the novel, she states, "the temperature and time of year is important because it displays Raskolnikov's irritable and uncomfortable character." This proven true because in the real world one tends to allow the heat to effect them physically and emotionally. In result, the heat effected Raskolnikov mindset and cause him to commit murder.
